Your day's excursion commences with a visit to the iconic Potala Palace, the winter abode of the Dalai Lama. This magnificent palace was first utilized in the 7th century by the 33rd great king of Tibet and holds significant historical value. Within the Potala Palace, you'll encounter its most treasured possessions, including the gilded burial stupas of past Dalai Lamas and the meditation Cave of the 33rd great king of Tibet.
Following a satisfying lunch, you'll proceed to the Jokhang Temple, founded by the same 33rd great king of Tibet during the 7th century. Inside the temple, you'll find the statue of Buddha Sakyamuni at the age of twelve. Outside, you'll witness pilgrims engaged in prostrations as an act of devotion to the Jokhang Temple. Surrounding the temple is Barkhor Street, where you can participate in the kora, a religious circumambulation practice, alongside pilgrims and locals, all while exploring the vibrant old market.

Your morning journey commences with a visit to the enchanting Dadong Village, often celebrated as the most beautiful village in Lhasa. Situated 25 kilometers southwest of Lhasa's downtown area, Dadong Village is a well-preserved ancient Tibetan village nestled amid picturesque valleys. Upon arrival, you'll have the opportunity to explore the Nyimatang Monastery, a sacred site dating back to the 11th century. A leisurely walk through the village will provide you with insights into the serene rural life in Lhasa. As part of this immersive experience, you'll visit a local Tibetan family and savor a meal prepared by the family.
In the afternoon, your journey continues with a visit to the Sera Monastery, one of the 'great three' Gelug monasteries in Tibet. A highlight of this visit is the Monks' debate, which typically takes place between “3 and 5” in the afternoon. Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to explore the Tibetan religious scripture printing house. Within the monastery, you can admire three intricate sand Mandalas and a colorful Rock Painting of Buddha. Your journey in the morning takes you from Lhasa to Shigatse. Along the way, you'll traverse the Gampala Pass, reaching an elevation of 4790 meters, where you'll be treated to a panoramic view of Yamdrok-Tso, a beautiful lake nestled at 4400 meters. This stunning lake is surrounded by snow-capped mountains, and in the distance, you'll be able to witness the majestic Holy Mount Nyenchen Khangsar, towering at 7191 meters, making it the highest mountain near Lhasa.
Continuing your drive, you'll also have the opportunity to pass by and admire the Korola Glacier on the roadside. At Manak Dam Lake, you can partake in hanging prayer flags at Simila Mountain Pass, a traditional Tibetan custom. Afterward, you'll arrive in Gyantse, historically the third-largest city in Tibet, following Lhasa and Shigatse. In Gyantse, you'll explore the renowned Pelkor Monastery and Gyantse Kumbum, a unique multi-storied structure. After approximately one and a half hours of driving, you'll reach Shigatse, Tibet's second-largest city. In the summer months, you'll find their tents dotting the flourishing grasslands, where yak and sheep graze freely, creating a picturesque scene.
Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to admire the Sky-Road Railway against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains. As the day draws to a close, you'll drive back to Damxung, bearing in mind the government's efforts to protect the environment, which have led to the closure of Lakeshore guesthouses. After breakfast, your day begins with a visit to Chimelong Nunnery, also known as Phyirmil Lung Nunnery. This peaceful small nunnery offers you the opportunity to explore different aspects of Buddhist studies in Tibet. While there, you may even catch a glimpse of a sky burial site, a unique Tibetan funeral practice, in the distance, providing insight into the diverse spiritual customs of the region.
Next, you'll journey to Tsurphu Monastery, which serves as the seat of the Karmapa branch of the Kagyupa order of Tibetan Buddhism. Here, you can deepen your understanding of the 'Black Hats' and the Karma Kagyupa school of Tibetan Buddhism. If you visit during the summertime (from June to September), you can also partake in a 'Linka outing,' a Tibetan-style picnic, in the small village located at the base of the Tsurphu Monastery hill.
Finally, your day concludes as you drive back to Lhasa, reflecting on the spiritual and cultural experiences that have enriched your journey through Tibet.
