Tsurphu to Yangpachen Trek 8 Nights 9 Days

On our second day, our tour will commence with a visit to the iconic Potala Palace. Constructed in the 17th century by the fifth Dalai Lama, this majestic palace offers awe-inspiring views of the entire city and houses the private quarters of the Dalai Lama, as well as numerous grand state rooms and chapels. Following our exploration of the palace, we will proceed to the revered Jokhang Temple, founded in the 7th century by Songtsen Gampo. This temple is considered the most sacred in Tibet. Here, you can immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage of this magical land. Take a stroll through the vibrant Barkhor Old Quarter and join pilgrims from across the Tibetan plateau on a kora, a sacred circumambulation around the Jokhang Temple. Kora is a practice in Tibetan Buddhism where devotees walk clockwise around a sacred site, often while reciting mantras, prayers, or sacred texts. It is believed to bring good fortune and blessings to those undertaking it.

On the third day, our exploration continues with visits to the Drepung and Sera monasteries. After breakfast, we'll journey to the outskirts of Lhasa to witness the magnificence of the Drepung Monastery, which holds the distinction of being the largest monastery in Tibet and once accommodated 7,000 monks. Together with the Ganden and Sera monasteries, Drepung is one of the three great centers of Tibetan Buddhist education within the Gelugpa School, also known as the Yellow Hat Sect. Founded in the 15th century, it served as the former residence of the Dalai Lama before the construction of the majestic Potala Palace.

In the afternoon, prepare to be captivated by the renowned debates of the Sera Monastery, where monks engage with vibrant energy in intellectual discourse, challenging each other's understanding of Buddhist philosophy. This experience is truly awe-inspiring and not to be missed, offering a glimpse into the intellectual vitality of Tibetan monastic life.

Our journey begins as we drive to Tsurphu Monastery, a significant religious site in Tibet. Upon arrival, we'll have the opportunity to explore the surroundings of the monastery, immersing ourselves in its serene ambience and preparing for the trek that awaits us the following day. This initial experience offers a glimpse into the spiritual and natural beauty that characterizes the region, setting the stage for an unforgettable adventure through the Tibetan landscape.

The first day of our trek is a gentle introduction, comprising a 4-hour journey covering a distance of 11 kilometers. We follow a verdant valley that meanders through the landscape, crisscrossed by babbling mountain streams. Keep a keen eye out for various species of mountain goats, cleverly camouflaged among the grey rocks. Along the route, you may come across small nomadic communities who set up their camps here during the summer herding months. Don't be surprised if you're invited into a yak-hair tent to savor a cup of salt butter tea or taste some fresh yak milk.

After about four hours of trekking, we crest the ridge, emerging onto a high plateau marked by a collection of rock-enclosed huts. Here, we'll find a suitable flat area for our camping arrangements. The scenery from day one is nothing short of breathtaking, and the landscapes exude the classic beauty of Tibet, setting the stage for a remarkable adventure.

Today's trek leads you along a vast, sweeping valley, eventually ascending to the highest point, Lasar La, at an elevation of 5,444 meters. Along the way, you'll encounter your first small pass, Damchen Nyingtri, standing at 5,303 meters. As you continue your journey, be sure to follow the cairns at the crest, and descend into a truly enchanting valley adorned with lichen-covered boulders, meandering streams, and the expansive, powder-blue sky above.

Three hours later, you will cross the Lasar La at 5,444 meters, transitioning into the Yangpachen Valley. Here, you'll encounter wide-open plateaus, spiky grass hummocks, and arid, tundra-like expanses of parched cracked earth. This unique landscape leads you towards Bartso, a village of the Drokpa, or nomadic people, comprised of five or six houses. These dwellings are surrounded by juniper, used for incense throughout the Tibetan world. The views of Brize, signifying a female yak herder, and Tarze, denoting a horse keeper, are truly magnificent, and you will feel a sense of protection under the watchful eye of the local mountain god, Nyenchen Tanglha. Camp near Bartso, where you can immerse yourself in the authentic local culture and scenery.

Leaving the charming village of Bartso in your wake, you'll follow a broad trail that leads you across the valley and over another ridge. From this vantage point, you'll be rewarded with stunning views of Nyenchen Tanghlha, the holiest mountain in central Tibet, towering at 7,111 meters. As you continue, you'll emerge at the Tanjung village, where you'll witness the daily life of the local community.

From here, the journey takes you on a gentle climb up rolling hills, where young nomadic boys and girls can often be seen picnicking on the plateaus while watching over their yaks and sheep as they graze. The landscapes remain consistently breathtaking. By mid-day, you should arrive at the Dorjee Ling Nunnery, marking the end of your trekking adventure.

At this point, our vehicle and driver will meet you at the Dorjee Ling Nunnery, offering a comfortable and convenient ride to the Yangpachen hot springs. Here, you can relax and enjoy a soothing soak in the hot springs. Afterward, we'll drive you back to Lhasa, bringing this incredible journey to a satisfying conclusion.

Today's trek covers a distance of 14 kilometers, taking you from the Dorje Ling Nunnery, via the picturesque Tsaburing Valley, to the esteemed Yangpachen Monastery. The trek offers a wonderful opportunity to savour the natural beauty of the region and immerse in its serene atmosphere.

Once the trek is complete, we'll arrange a drive back to Lhasa, allowing you to comfortably return to the city. This marks the end of your trekking adventure, and you can reflect on the remarkable experiences and stunning landscapes you've encountered during your journey through Tibet.
