Shoton Festival
The Shoton Festival, often referred to as the "Yogurt Festival," is a major celebration that takes place during the first week of the seventh lunar month in Tibet. The festival commences with a spectacular event at Drepung Monastery, where a giant Thangka (a painted or embroidered Buddhist scroll) depicting the Buddha is unveiled. People gather eagerly at the foot of the hill, waiting for this grand moment of homage. From the first day of the seventh month onward, Tibetan drama troupes showcase traditional operas and dramas in iconic locations such as the Potala Palace and Norbulingka. Following these performances, they travel to various monasteries and temples, adding a vibrant cultural dimension to this significant Tibetan festival.
